A well-designed master bedroom is key to a happy home! It’s one of the most personal spaces of your home and should feel like an oasis the moment you enter. Keeping a serene space where you can rest, relax, and recharge at the end of a long day is the goal for your primary bedroom.

If you’ve been around here long, you know I’m not about breaking the bank to update a room.

There’s so much you can do with just a few tweaks here and there to give a room a completely different vibe…even if you are completely changing design styles.

Contemporary vs. Modern

Before we dive into these beautiful ideas, let’s get specific on what we’re talking about when it comes to interior design styles that I’m referring to.

Contemporary and modern may seem interchangeable, but they each have different nuances you might not have picked up on before.

The contemporary design style is what’s on trend…in the here and now. It doesn’t refer to a specific time frame and has a lot of variations as it evolves and fluctuates.

Modern style refers to the early to mid-twentieth century. Think of mid-century modern, earthy palettes, natural elements, leather, stone, and similar materials. Of the two styles, this style is more “strict” as it falls within a specific time frame. The color palettes are mostly neutral with functional decor pieces.

In truth, there’s a lot of overlap between decor styles. Both styles favor clean, simple lines and a comfortable, cozy vibe. However, modern styles focus more on the functionality of a space while contemporary is more ornamental and trendy.

Now, you don’t have to go all in on any particular style. In fact, mixing different design styles, as we did with this master bathroom, is a beautiful way to create a collected look and feel in your home and really make it feel like “yours”.

Modern Master Bedroom Design Tips

So, how do you find good decor and design ideas for master bedrooms? Whether you need a quick refresh, working on a tight budget, remodeling, or a complete overhaul, there are plenty of inspiration and design ideas here.

Here are some general ideas to use for inspiration on your next master bedroom project.

Modern Bedroom Color Schemes

Since the modern decor style encompasses and overlaps with a lot of other decor styles, there’s really no hard and fast rule when it comes to color schemes.

If you are someone who enjoys switching up your home’s decor, I recommend sticking to neutral colors, like beige and cream. Then, incorporate different colors and textures in your bedding, wall art, and other furniture pieces. Those are much easier to swap out on a whim.

If you’re ready to go all in, bright primary colors, blues, blacks, and even bold colors work well with a modern design style. Think mid-century modern with the “burnt” colors, like red, orange, and brown. These bolder hues would also be great incorporated into a neutral-colored space with white walls or a lot of natural light.

Make a bold statement with an accent wall that showcases your personality. Whether it’s a vibrant paint color, textured wallpaper, or a stunning mural, let your creativity shine. Consider geometric patterns or nature-inspired designs for a modern twist.

Modern Furniture Ideas

Modern furniture aims to be functional over ornamental. It’s simple and practical.

Choose furniture with basic forms and shapes, with straight lines. These appear to be less decorative but can be easily enhanced by adding layers of blankets, throw pillows, and similar textiles.

Ideas might include a traditional four-poster bed with a leather armchair in the corner. Or, a refurbished antique bed with a lounge chair in soft fabric.

Modern Lighting

Great lighting can make or break a room! I recommend incorporating different pieces of lighting throughout the room. This gives a warm glow in corners that may appear dark or cold.

Since your bedroom should be an oasis, swap harsh overhead lighting for lamps on the bedside tables. Dimmable bulbs or low-watt bulbs are a great way to enhance the coziness of the space. Installing wall sconces on either side of the bed would be a great way to add visual interest to the main bedroom.

Textures and Fabrics

Textures and fabrics are arguably some of the most important elements in a bedroom that transition between decor styles.

For example, a leather chair might seem brisk and uncomfortable. However, when it’s layered with a chenille blanket and a velvet throw pillow, it instantly creates a cozy corner to curl up with a good book.

The same could be said for layering other fabrics like lace, cotton, satin, etcetera on a soft white bedspread at the foot of the bed.

The rough texture of a jute rug can be layered with a shaggy area rug that is soft underfoot.

Also don’t forget about your window treatments! Curtains – even sheer window coverings – can drastically change the vibe of a room. Light and wispy fabrics will mean a relaxed, modern spa-like room, while richly colored velvet curtains create a modern yet retro lounge vibe to the room.

Just because you are redecorating, doesn’t mean you have to demolish walls, buy new light fixtures, or even repaint the whole room.

You can easily update a bedroom with a few budget-friendly swaps, especially if the walls are already in a neutral paint color.

For example, repainting a bedside table, updating a lamp shade, a new rug, or picking up a few new throw pillows can drastically change the look and feel of a room.

Focus on creating a cohesive look with artwork, mirrors, plants, and other decor elements that reflect your personal style and tastes.

Remember, the key to creating a modern master bedroom is to strike the perfect balance between style and functionality. So, whether you prefer sleek and minimalistic or cozy and inviting, design a space that reflects your individual taste and lifestyle.

With these modern master bedroom ideas as your guide, you’re well on your way to transforming your bedroom into the ultimate retreat – a place where you can unwind, recharge, and dream big.

  1. Can’t wait to see what you do with the space! It will look fab! And just tell your husband that once the bedroom is done, y’all might want to spend a little more time in there (wink, wink) (is that too much?)
