It’s been a long time coming.  If you even remember, we shared we were expecting our 3rd child and 1st girl back at the end of the fall One Room Challenge.  From there, it was crickets until I announced our design plan earlier this year.

Look at Nursery Before Renovation

It’s been a loooooong couple months working to get this nursery to match my vision.  And boy does it EVER!  But first, remember what it looked used to look like?

We installed a shiplap feature wall, painted the entire room, installed some GORGEOUS wallpaper, and redid an old dresser.  This was all pretty much done by the end of the first week!

Then it was back to hearing crickets for a few weeks, we had some bad weather coupled with the fact that I am in fact pregnant, tired, and cranky and my husband and I both work.  We just didn’t get a lot done.

Progress updates

I shared another update on weeks 2 and 3 progress and the final update 2 weeks ago.  Even though it was slow moving, I loved getting to do a lot with my husband. Making all my farmhouse nursery ideas come to life was so fulfilling.

We had to do a lot after the kids were asleep but it was fun getting to work on things with him.  If only this could be our full-time job (a girl can dream, right?!)…

I guess I should also mention that I don’t particularly like themes when it comes to nurseries.  I decided to go for a farmhouse look, complete with the normal neutrals of that style (grays and creams).

Then, in addition, I wanted to add pops of pink because she’s a GIRL (!!!!) with floral accents. But, enough rambling.  Time to see some pretty pictures!!

The Farmhouse Nursery Reveal

Farmhouse nursery ideas in a girls bedroom that is completely renovated and full of charm and finishing touches.

Ahhh isn’t it amazing?!  The entire nursery is more beautiful than I could have ever envisioned.  It’s such a wonderful feeling seeing my initial ideas/vision come to life and surpass what I thought was possible.

It all started with a little paint.  If you can only afford to do one small renovation, PAINT!  I’m always blown away by the difference a simple coat of paint makes.

Paint Ideas for Farmhouse Nursery

We chose to paint the room Alabaster by Sherwin-Williams and I’m SO glad we did.  It’s the perfect neutral paint color that absolutely screams farmhouse style to me.

If you need help choosing a paint color, be sure to check out my Ultimate Guide to Popular Paint Colors!

I also love how warm it makes the room feel while still providing a clean, neutral backdrop for the rest of the space.  I cannot recommend this color enough!!

No room would be complete without a little shiplap, right?  We added a faux shiplap feature wall for around $30 that was also painted Alabaster, so it definitely made the cut for the best paint colors for shiplap.

You can read the full tutorial for the shiplap wall here.  It’s the perfect focal point for the room and a great wall to center her crib on!

Floor Coverings Add Contrast

Next, we got rid of the old gray and white striped rug and I found my rug soulmate.  When I first had an image of what I wanted the nursery to look like, I envisioned basically this exact rug.

And, to actually FIND it from Plush Rugs and USE it in the nursery is incredible.

The base cream color is almost an exact match to the wall color (total coincidence that I wasn’t planning).  The dark and light gray pattern on the top is the perfect match for the space.

Unfortunately, the pretty area rug is no longer sold, but here’s a similar one.

Selecting Furniture for Farmhouse Nursery

The other big piece of furniture in the room is an old dresser we found at an antique store and the most comfortable rocker ever.

You can read all about the dresser makeover here.

On top of the rocker (which also reclines meaning I’ll probably just sleep in it), I added two gorgeous pillows from Tonic Living.

One is pale pink and the other is mixed pink florals.  They really tie the entire room “theme” together while also making such a pretty accent to the rocker.

Did I mention the pillows are also soooo comfortable?  That’s an absolutely necessity for the late night nursing sessions in my near future!

Another great farmhouse nursery idea is to have a rocker chair with some floral pillows to make the room more cozy

Wallpaper Accents in the Nursery Closet

One of my favorite parts of the room is the closet.  From the gorgeous floral wallpaper to the custom-built cubbies and shelves, there’s not much I don’t love about this space.

And, that’s not even mentioning the best part – skinnylap closet doors!!

Now that all the big stuff was complete, it was time to move on to my favorite part – room styling and decorating!  I got to work and enlisted my hubby to help!

Ideas to Style and Decorate Farmhouse Nursery

We updated an old and unused curtain rod with spray paint and some new knobs.  I used old curtains I had to complete the whole window look.

My hubby built the most perfect DIY shadow box using an old frame I had for almost no money at all.  If you remember, I was originally crushing on a shadow box that was WAYY over budget.

I found an old 8-pane window for just a few dollars.  After giving it some TLC (removing the glass, cleaning it and applying sealer), we mounted it to the wall.  I made a simple wreath that we hung from the window with old lace.  The whole thing looks beautiful and oh-so-rustic above her bed!

Next, I made some farmhouse style shelves to go above her new farmhouse dresser.

I loved filling the shelves with little frames, accents (like this DIY nursery name sign and string art), and photos of our growing family.

I also grabbed a few baskets for some storage in her room.  This smaller white basket from Serena & Lily (a luxury, home decor brand) is so sturdy and perfect for holding her multitude of swaddle blankets.

One of my absolute favorite projects from the nursery is this wood bead chandelier I made from a cheap IKEA chandelier. It was SO easy to make!

Don't overlook the lighting fixture and be sure to update that as well to complete the room renovation

Decorating the Farmhouse Nursery Closet

In addition to the baskets around the nursery, I added a TON of baskets inside the custom closet.  Plus, we used piping to make our own hanging rod and built the shelves.

One of my favorite little details in the room is the antique knobs, plates, and hardware on the skinnylap closet doors.

We found all the old rusted hardware at the same place we found the old window (Construction Junction if you’re in Pittsburgh!) and spray painted them a matte black.  You just can’t find stuff like this anymore (and yes, I know I sound like an old lady;) )

Just look at these knobs!!!!

I am head over heels in LOVE with this nursery.  I jokingly said I want to put one of those ropes across the door like you would see in a museum to prevent anyone from going in.

  9. I love your nursery!! We are in the process of creating our first nursery for a sweet baby girl! We are also going for a farmhouse vibe in the room with shiplap and all! I love how light and bright Alabaster paint is! Would you still recommend the paint color if our furniture is white? We ordered pottery barn furniture and the color of it is “cloud” which is a more dull white versus bright white! Thanks!!

    1. Hi Emma!! You are too sweet! Hmmm…I think Alabaster might be too white paired with white furniture. It’s definitely a creamy color not totally white but it might just wash out white furniture. (we have a Pottery Barn crib that we LOVE!). I’d recommend getting a paint sample and painting a portion of the wall next to the white furniture and see if you like it. It’s so hard to imagine exactly what it would look like. If you did go with Alabaster, that does give you the option of decorating with tons of color, which is always fun! Good luck and congrats on your little girl 🙂

  10. What a lovely nursery! What color of white is the crown molding painted? I’ve been having the hardest time picking two white tones to coordinate in the same room – one for trim and one for the wall – and I love yours!

  11. This nursery is beautiful! And I love how it was DIY and achieved on a budget! How you did all of it with 2 little ones and another on the way is truly inspiring!!!
