One Room Challenge {Week 6}: A Shared Boys Bedroom Reveal PLUS an Exciting Announcement!

Today’s the day!  The big Shared Boys Bedroom reveal!

You see, six very short weeks ago we lost our minds signed up for what I thought would be an easy task – the One Room Challenge (ORC) where we have to redo a room in … six weeks!

Now, we weren’t renovating a bathroom or doing a total gut job room so I thought “how hard could  it be?”.  Truth is, the entire six weeks was extremely stressful, time-consuming and at times complete chaos.

My head was constantly swirling with ideas and ever-changing plans for the room.

Every day/minute/second we weren’t at work or sleeping or dealing with tantrums was spent designing something in the room, shopping for the room, or actually completing projects for the room.

And then, BOOM!  Six weeks passes and somehow, by some crazy miracle, the room is finished and is just perfect.

Okay, so it wasn’t a miracle that the room was finished in time.  I owe so much to my husband and father-in-law who worked endlessly to get everything done, listened to my constant demands and 1 billion texts about what I wanted to do, and helped out with the kiddos when I needed time.  It’s amazing to have amazing people in my life (yes I meant to put amazing twice 😉 )

To see how we got to this point, check out the previous weeks of chaos:

Alright, enough chatting.  Let me show you my little boys’ new shared bedroom!!

Ahhhhh LOVE!!

Oh my gosh I LOVE it!

Let’s take a closer look at all the different parts:

What do little boys love to do?  PLAY, of course!

We have a bazillion dress up outfits and old costumes and they absolutely love to dress up and pretend play.

It’s so nice to have all the costumes out hanging and visible so they can pick an outfit out and so there is a place for them to be put away.

A key part of this entire room makeover is making sure everything has a place.  That way, it’s easier to put away {in theory haha}.

The little bags from IKEA are perfect for hanging smaller items.  In the blue bag we have little masks and arm/leg things for costumes (which is obviously their technical name!! 😉 ).

The clothes stand (also from IKEA) has a ton of hooks which is perfect for the plethora of costumes we have.  Just entirely too many.  I also hung their Star Wars masks on the stand and that adorable fireman’s hat!

Next to the play area is the gorgeous exposed brick fireplace that we finished off in week 4 with drool-worthy cement tile.  Seriously.  I want to cement tile everythingggg.

The basket looks so perfect right in the fireplace.  It’s being used to store some stuffed animals hand puppets.

We added some lovely new curtains to the windows.  The bold green and white stripe is perfectly “boy”.  Best part?  They’re black out curtains, so, if your kids pride themselves on being like a rooster and wake up at dawn, the curtains keep them asleep just a bit longer.

{And, yes, Liam thinks it’s funny to be a rooster.  He better learn to make coffee for mama}

That closet there to the left?  Remember what it looked like before?

It’s like toy organization heaven.  This may be my favorite part of the room.

We added all the shelving (a DIY I’ll share soon) and created a functional, budget-friendly organizational system.

Again, everything has a place.

The very bottom is for blocks, legos and trucks.  All accessible to both boys.

Shared Boys Bedroom packed with tons of storage and organization ideas, a kids craft table, kids reading nook, bunk beds, DIY magnet board, clothing storage and fun, bright and modern design!

The first shelf has wooden cars and trucks and matchbox cars in matching sturdy plastic bins from IKEA.  I added some mini pallet signs for me because I mean they can’t read.  But, I think they look  cute!

They’re just too heavy for my youngest to move but light enough for my oldest to pick up and also get to the parking garage.  But, my youngest can still reach in and grab a car or wooden toy if he wants.

It’s really perfect because it limits the mess.  There’s no dumping all the toys out, playing for 5 minutes, then whining about picking up.  For the most part, they come grab a few toys and play then put them back.

The second shelf contains toys mostly for just my oldest, Liam.  There are smaller pieces that are potential choking hazards for Charlie and also his millennium falcon because that’s sacred to him.

Also, this shelf contains some toys that tend to be “dump out and forget about it” toys.  So the bristle blocks and alphabet animals to the right.  That way Charlie can’t just dump them out.  We bring them out to play, then put them back in their place.

I picked up the cutest storage boxes (seen next to the millennium falcon) that are perfect for some smaller toys.

The third shelf and fourth shelf are both for me.  The lovely boxes from IKEA are HUGE and offer a ton of storage while remaining so pretty!

I’ve decided to use them for shoes, halloween and seasonal.  Shoes are shoes.  Hard to believe we have more costumes but there they are in the Halloween bin along with their trick-or-treat bags that I lose every.single.year.  Seasonal will contains goggles, swim shoes and swim trunks in the summer and gloves, hats and snow gear for the winter.  Basically, anything I have to search for days to find when the season changes will be all in one spot!

The top shelf is miscellaneous storage.  Diapers, blankets and towels.  And Tidmuth Sheds, which is entirely too big (it’s from Thomas the tank engine).

Ahh just one more look 🙂

So, the kids aren’t really into storage.  Shocking.

But, they are loving their new magnet board and craft table – comprising the “Make” area of the room.

I drew a sketch of what I wanted the craft table to look like.  And let’s just say it’s on par with a 4 year old’s drawing.  My ahhhmazing FIL came up with this from my horrible drawing!

Those blue metal chairs are SO perfect.

There’s storage for all the coloring books here:

And shelves for crayons, markers and play-doh.

I’ll be sharing the full DIY for the table soon!

Behind the table is another project to share soon – DIY magnet board!

I made ombre distressed magnet letters for each little boy (tutorial shared on Kenarry).  We used IKEA’s kitchen storage system to hang fun buckets that are perfect for storing the rest of the magnets.

Above the magnet board I used another IKEA product to hang some of their recent art.  Liam was SO excited to show everyone which pictures he painted, and less excited to show Charlie’s haha.

There are those curtains again!  Love!

On to the tent / reading nook …

(We still have to get one of those wire protector things for in the tent)

My awesome friend sewed the entire tent and two giant floor pillows!  The boys LOOOOVE this space.

The IKEA spice racks hold a ton of books and all the books are visible so the kids don’t have to pull out all/of/the/books!

Liam picked out star lights that look so perfect in the tent.  Every morning he wakes up, plugs in the star lights, sits on his floor pillow and reads books.  *Heart melts*.

Full tent DIY to come!

Back in the center of the room, we have the most comfortable rug ever.  Seriously.  This rug is so soft you could sleep on it.  It’s fluffy and fun and a perfect place for the kids to play.

Oh and what’s that under the bunks beds?  A DIY train table!!

I’d say they like their new train table.  Mama likes that it fits right under their bed.

While the boys are sharing the room, I wanted them to have their own space, too.  Each of their bed’s area has a personalized letter for their name, another spice rack with books just for them, and a pretty art piece held up with washi tape.

The bedding from IKEA is so fluffy and comfortable and bright.  I could really sleep in these beds!

I also found each boy a stuffed animal from Wee Believers that says a prayer or sings a religious song.  So cute.

Charlie loves to point out al the different vehicles on the bedding.  And “read” books 🙂

Liam loves to go up to his space and read.  Or to hide from Charlie.

The bunks beds from IKEA are a sleek, functional design that take up the least amount of space possible, which is perfect!

We also picked up the cutest rolling storage bin from IKEA to store the trains and tracks for the train table.  It fits nicely next to the beds and can be rolled over to the carpet when they’re ready to play.

{Look at how fluffy that rug is!!!}

We also gave their boring, standard kid dresser a major facelift.

The chalkboard paint on the front is my favorite!  I hand-lettered all the words.  It took foreverrrr because I was never quite satisfied.  But, I’m loving how it turned out!

I made a little monochromatic gallery wall above the dresser using some prints I made myself and a few much better looking prints from my friend Lora at Craftitivty Designs.

Lastly, we organized the other closet in the room.

The cute baskets at the top store their hoodies which always seem to take up SO much room.  I have color coordinated hangers (even though they are clearly two different sizes, it just looks prettier 😉 ).

We have a hook for their towels and space for their tool bench (which they pull out when they want to play with it).

We also added a storage unit from IKEA to keep a few “loose” toys under control.

The three bins of the storage unit are superheroes and other figurines, trucks/cars, and puzzles.

I HAD to figure out a way to organize puzzles.  The pieces always end up everywhere and my head was going to explode.  So, I found mesh sports bags on Amazon that the puzzles fit perfectly into.  That way, the pieces can fall out but not be all over the place.

This may be my favorite part of the room (how many times have I said that?!)

So, do the boys like it?

WOW!  It feels SO good to be done.  And beyond thrilled with how the room turned out.  Every late night and long day working on it was totally worth it.

I can’t thank my sponsors enough!  We are so lucky to have teamed up with such amazing companies.

The only thing we didn’t get to make was a custom growth chart – I had just a great idea but we simply didn’t have time 🙁  – I’m still planning on making it!

We also didn’t end up making the space felt board because the wall i wanted to put it on just wouldn’t fit it.

Don’t forget to check out the other One Room Challenge makeovers – I can’t wait to see all of the reveals this week!

Oh … and that announcement.  Why are we having the boys share a bedroom?  To make room for baby #3 coming this April!  Oh, and she’s a giiiiiirrrllllll.  We are so excited.  Expect a very pink, frilly, ruffly, all-girl nursery sometime in the New Year 🙂

Thank you for sticking with my throughout this challenge and just in general.  I’m consistently humbled by and thankful for all of your continued support <3

Wishing you a joyful day!
